Understanding Pain and Injuries
It is not normal to have pain. It is not uncommon for people to
ignore symptoms, but pain is not a symptom, it is a warning signal.
Pain is often a result of a problem. Muscle tension and spasms are
usually a direct compensation for an underlying problem.
Who suffers from back pain?
Almost everyone experiences back pain at one time or another in
their life. It is not an age related issue: children can benefit from
chiropractic just as much as a 90 year old. It also has nothing to do
with activity levels.
What causes back and neck pain?
Pain is the result of many factors, and often a combination of them.
Cumulative trauma, stress, and nutrition can often be found at the root
of the problem. Most importantly though, if the joints are not moving
properly, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments have to compensate. This
compensation eventually causes strain and the resulting pain.
Eventually poor joint functionality will lead to disc degeneration, a
painful a potentially dangerous condition.
Why Chiropractic for pain?
Traditional medicine does not treat the disc degeneration until it
requires a surgical or medicated solution. Surgery should always be the
last resort: it is painful; has a long recovery period; it is often
costly; and most importantly, surgery exposes the patient to the
possibility of further complications.
Chiropractic uses non-invasive methods to help prevent disc
degeneration from occurring. By keeping the joints moving freely,
muscles and ligaments are able to perform their jobs without
compensating and without pain. In many cases Chiropractic can delay or
eliminate the need for surgical solutions in the future.
Understanding Chiropractic Care
Many people come to the Chiropractor only when they experience pain.
It is true that most of the time pain can be relieved immediately with
one or two visits. Chiropractic care brings immediate relief to a body
in distress from poorly functioning joints. Most of the time though,
Chiropractic patients experience the best long-term results by
continuing Chiropractic care by following the treatment plan set by the
doctor.
Long term or very traumatic injuries often cause a situation in the
body where the body must learn to function properly once again. It
takes a series of “adjustments” by the chiropractor, exercises
instructed by the Chiropractor, and often learning to do activities in
new ways to prevent further injury to really eliminate the problems and
create a pain-free future. Many patients choose to visit their
Chiropractor once every several weeks for maintenance “tune-ups” and
others want to bring their bodies back to a pain-free state and do not
need any further care.
The most important thing to remember about treating back and neck
pain with Chiropractic is that it requires patient participation. Just
as a traditional doctor would send a patient out of the office with a
regime of drugs, exercises, and maybe other remedies, a Chiropractor
will do the same – only there will be no drugs, only your willingness
to participate in your own recovery.
Injuries
Since nearly any physical force radiates to the skeletal system and
can cause spinal problems, a Chiropractic checkup is essential after an
accident. A forgotten trip or fall can cause severe health problems in
later life.
Whiplash is a common injury experienced most often in car accidents
and “collision sports” like football and boxing. Besides being the
single support of the head, the neck is filled with life critical
suppliers to the brain. Neck problems can cause headaches, numbness, or
“pins and needles” sensations in the upper body in addition to a host
of other complications.
Many of these problems have to traditional medical solution, but are
effectively treated with Chiropractic care. It is very important that
neck and traumatic injuries be treated as soon as possible to prevent
greater pain and future complications.
